The present volume (which originally appeared in 1972) is devoted to the problem of pluralism in the Church; hence its subtitle: Aspects of Christian Pluralism. Balthasar’s account of the issue is a resolutely theological one based on the New Testament’s understanding of the Church as an icon of the Trinity. Plurality, Balthasar shows, flows from unity and returns to it. Not in order to disappear, but in order to reveal unity as what it always was: a communion of love.
