The text presented in these pages was originally composed in 1985 for an illustrated volume containing reproductions of the famous miniatures of the tenth-century Bamberg Apocalypse (for this, see the Spanish edition). Although Balthasar frequently refers to these images, his commentary stands on its own, offering a condensed version of the account of the Book of Revelation at the beginning of volume four of the Theo-drama. John’s depiction of eschatological reality, Balthasar shows, is not simply a prediction of future events, but a prophetic word concerning the drama of salvation unfolding here and now in our midst.
