In the present volume (which originally appeared in 1972), Adrienne von Speyr offers a theological paraphrase of the book of Job. Her reading of the text evinces a particular attention to its subtle turns of thought and the existential attitudes underlying them. This approach allows her to highlight what (according to the sacred author’s intention) is problematic in the various characters. At the same time, it furnishes her with an opportunity to reflect in sustained fashion on the similarity and difference between Job’s suffering and that of the Lord on the Cross.
