First published in 1969 as part of the theological encyclopedia Mysterium Salutis, the present volume originally bore the title Theologie der Drei Tage: Theology of the Three Days. It offers a contemplative penetration of the Paschal Triduum, understood not only as the event of our redemption, but also as Christ’s supreme revelation of God as Trinity. While constantly relying on Scripture, Tradition, and the Fathers, Balthasar also draws on the concrete theology of the saints and mystics (especially Adrienne von Speyr), who often exhibit the meaning of the “pro nobis” more compellingly than conventional dogmatic theology.
