In a series of monotypes devoted to King David (first published in 1955), well-known Austrian artist Hans Fronius explores the human depths of a story that, as Balthasar observes, rivals the heroic legends of the Greeks and the German Song of the Nibelungen. Balthasar’s own commentary highlights David as a foreshadowing of Jesus. “David,” he writes, “wears a double mask. . . For he his deeds, both good and bad, in view of Another who would truly be the Son hailing from Bethlehem.”
