This series of meditations on the Passion of Christ came into being simultaneously with the dictation of the commentary on the Passion in St. Matthew (written 1948, published 1957). While in the latter the meditation followed the Gospel text without a break, there was a clearly marked lingering over particular scenes. The meditations on these scenes form a whole insofar as they are always concerned with the interior aspect of the Passion event, mostly with the interior states and experiences of Christ, sometimes also with those of the disciples or of other persons taking part in the events… They do not pander to curiosity but invite to meditation and adoration.
