The purpose of this volume, first published in 1987, the year before Balthasar’s death, and featuring a useful biblical index, is to help priests, parishes, and prayerful individuals understand the unity of the three Sunday readings. The book does not offer “model homilies or meditations, but only suggestions for preaching and praying. The contents are a quarry, nothing more, from which the reader is free to remove whatever suits him. Obviously, a thorough interpretation of the texts is beyond the scope of a book like this. Nevertheless, an effort has been made to do justice to the most important challenges raised by an exegetically responsible account of each pericope” (from the author’s Preface).
