This second volume of The Catholic Letters, which was originally published in 1961, contains Adrienne von Speyr’s verse-by-verse commentary on the three Epistles of John. This commentary is theological, in that it seeks to unlock fundamental biblical concepts in a way that answers basic spiritual questions: What is religion, freedom, and obedience? What is the relationship between faith and deed, suffering and judgment, and good and evil? Adrienne’s original exploration remains an ecclesial reading of the text, which constantly looks to the Church as our “mistress in truth and love” and always “possesses more than she is able to give us.”
