The third volume of Adrienne von Speyr’s Posthumous Works is itself divided into two volumes. This second of the two, Cross and Hell. II. Experiences in Mission (1971), is devoted primarily to Adrienne’s experiences, in missional obedience, of the objective reality of hell and of the Lord’s descent to the dead. As Hans Urs von Balthasar explains in his foreword, these experiences mustn’t be isolated from Adrienne’s work as a whole. Rather, her “numerous interpretations of Scripture and her reflections on various theological and spiritual topics are the solid foundation on which the portrait erected in the Posthumous Works is firmly planted.”
