The third volume of Adrienne von Speyr’s Posthumous Works is itself divided into two volumes. This first of the two, Cross and Hell. I. Passiontide (1966), presents in chronological order the experiences of the Lord’s Passion granted to Adrienne every Holy Week from 1941 to 1965. As Hans Urs von Balthasar explains in his foreword, these experiences mustn’t be isolated from Adrienne’s work as a whole. Rather, her “numerous interpretations of Scripture and her reflections on various theological and spiritual topics are the solid foundation on which the portrait erected in the Posthumous Works is firmly planted.”
