The present volume, which was originally published in 1951, consists of a systematically arranged selection of texts by Adrienne von Speyr on the nature of prayer. “Though each of the individual pieces has a content and value of its own,” Hans Urs von Balthasar writes in his foreword, “they all reflect an unmistakable unity of style, a characteristic way of thinking about, and understanding, both prayer and Christianity as a whole. The unity of these texts consists in the author’s effort to pass from the human perspective to the ecclesial, from the ecclesial to the Christological, and from the Christological to the Trinitarian, with each new level providing a deeper foundation for the previous ones.”
