The present volume, which originally appeared in 1957, contains Adrienne von Speyr’s verse-by-verse commentary on the entire Letter to the Colossians. As always, Adrienne does not approach the text as a scholar, but as a contemplative believer. Nevertheless, the work is rich in theological insight. A prominent theme that Adrienne develops throughout is that of reciprocity: between Father and Son, God and Christians, Paul and the community. As she herself writes, “Apostle and community members are made brethren in the Lord; but this brotherhood is not external, not something that would bind them only on earth; it is something essential, a participation in the life of the Lord, an exercise of obedience to him in intimacy with him, which constitutes the entire life and being of the Christian and of the Church” (from the chapter “The Apostle and his Community”).
