The present volume, which originally appeared in 1956, contains Adrienne von Speyr’s contemplative exegesis of Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. Existence as mission, the centrality of faith, and life “in Christ Jesus” are three of the main themes treated. As Hans Urs von Balthasar writes regarding the last point in his foreword, Adrienne “understands and unfolds” existence in Christ “in terms that are at once ethical and mystical and personal and ecclesial-sacramental. Indeed, her approach reaches into the depths of salvation history and the Trinity. It’s just here, however, that Paul’s thought transcends itself into the more encompassing total truth of Christianity. What overwhelms Paul is mission (which he is not identical with himself) and grace: It is Christ, who is God and man; it is triune love.”
