Originally published in 1972, the present volume contains Adrienne von Speyr’s meditations on the scriptural story of Elijah, who, as she shows, remains exemplary for every believer called by God. In particular, Adrienne focuses on the theme of vocation and mission, as well as on the tension between the prophet’s personality and his task. Elijah himself, she writes, displays his awareness of this tension when he covers his face on the mountain. In so doing, he “shows how unworthy he knows himself to be of this encounter. But God has willed the encounter and brought it about so that his word to Elijah may become true. The true following on the part of Elijah would consist of his being there and being veiled, because God has called. The beautiful thing is that this is enough for a whole life. This is the meaning of Carmel” (from the chapter “The Encounter with God”).
