As its sub-title (Two Sketches on Expectation of the Imminent End in the Bible) indicates, the present volume (first published in 1966), contains two short pieces on the so-called imminent expectation of the Second Coming in the New Testament: “Faith and Imminent Expectation,” originally a lecture for the doctorate honoris causa conferred by the University of Münster in 1965, and “Bible and Eschatology,” the revised text of a lecture delivered on German radio. Rather than detailed analysis of the Biblical texts, these two pieces offer a synthetic overview of the question, a reconstruction of the theological structure lying within the exegetical issues surrounding the topic.
