It is here that he begins to draw closer to his central theme, namely, the revelation of the good in the dramatic encounter of divine and human freedom in Christ. He accordingly devotes ample space to developing a concept of personhood based on Jesus’ own unique identity as the Son sent into the world by the Father. The unity of person and mission in Christ then becomes, in its turn, the model for the “theological personhood” of those called to participate in it: the dramatis personae who play a central role in the Christological drama itself. Personhood in Christ, Balthasar shows, is (theo)dramatic, since what it means to be a person comes to light only in the drama played out in the life, death, and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
