This abridged translation of Augustine’s commentary on the Psalms offers readers an encounter with a decisive text in the history of Catholic theology and spirituality. Drawing on an ancient tradition rooted in the New Testament, Augustine discloses the Psalms as a prayed Christology. For the Psalms not only speak about Christ. In them, it is Christ himself who speaks – sometimes as the Head and sometimes in the person of his members. To pray the Psalms, Augustine shows, is to be caught up into the dialogue of the “total Christ” with himself – the shared solitude of the Bridegroom and his ecclesial Bride.
